Hair health

Maintaining hair health is challenging as genes, environment, weather, and diet play a vital role, but pollution and dirt have become problematic.

It is difficult to take your eyes off from silky and shiny hair, and it becomes even harder when we have stuck, frizzy hair that lacks shine.

Today we’ll see the ways by which we can improve and maintain our hair health.

Ways to improve hair health

There are numerous easy ways with which we can keep our dazzling hair always dazzling.

Stay hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential as 1/4 hair shaft is water. Water is the primary source of energy and minerals to the hair. It hydrates the whole strands, which save your hair from frizziness, becoming dull, lifeless, dry, split ends, and rough brittle.

Hydration is also said to help keep toxins and pollutants which might lead to hair fall by restoring the locks with moisture.

Hair is the second-fastest-growing thing in our body; it spans 4-6years if we keep it nourished. The dry scalp can accelerate hair fall and reduce hair age to even a few days.

When an individual is dehydrated, the water quantity is less than required; hence, the body provides essential parts for proper functioning. The minimal amount of water that was reaching our hair also stops.

Am I dehydrated

Our body signals everything that happens in our body, and we need to notice them. If you are dehydrated, then even the slightest touch may bring out the hair strands, and you will see the follicle/ white base of the hair.

Ways you can observe that if you are hydrated or not.

  • Dry mouth
  • Frequent headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dry skin (if it gets severe)
  • Odor-causing bacteria in the mouth
  • Dark yellow to amber color urine

Drink plenty of water to avoid such situations.

hair knots

Avoid making knots

Untangling a knot can take a bunch of your hair away from you. Making a knot of your hair makes it easier to manage hair, but if you have curly and thick hair, then it can be painful untangling it. Hence, it is essential to untangle hair properly.

Oiling is the key

The oil nourishes our hair by providing minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids. There are many types of hair oil available in the market:

  • Almond oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Onion oil
  • Mustard seeds oil
  • Argan hair oil
  • Lavender hair oil and many more

We ran two quick surveys asking people which they found the best hair, and the answer in both the surveys was the same. Argon oil and following to it was coconut oil.

Argon oil

As the name suggests, it comes from the fruits of the argan tree. Argon oil is rich in nutrients like fatty acids, omega 6, vitamin E (good for hair, skin, eyes), etc. They are also rich in antioxidants and oleic acid, which show positive impacts on the heart.

Argon oil is the most chosen oil because of the following reasons:

  • It nourishes and moisturizes the hair, making them look more smooth and hydrated.
  • Vitamin E, fatty acids, and antioxidants restore shine to dull, lifeless hair.
  • It protects the hair from dryness, UV rays and neutralizes free radicals.
  • It makes the scalp healthy by moisturizing it.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is a versatile oil. We can use it while cooking, removing makeup, and on the body to moisturize it. The undermentioned reasons make it stand out:

  • Coconut oil, due to its structure, is easily absorbable, which makes it reduce protein loss.
  • It makes your hair grow faster and reduces breakage by moisturizing it.
  • It can help treat dandruff.

Cleanse and condition

There are many types of shampoo which claim to strengthen your hair and clear the dirt from your scalp. Trusting the claims made by companies, people tend to try multiple kinds of shampoo without even realizing which one would suit them.

Every individual needs a different type of shampoo. Maybe one needs to strengthen the hair, and perhaps the other needs to make their hair silky. Hence, see what type you need accordingly select one.

Ideal shampoo:

  • Shampoo with natural ingredients like bringha, shikakai, reetha, amla, neem, etc.
  • Try getting shampoo without parabens and sulfate
  • If you have an oily scalp, then avoid shampoos that hydrate and moisturize
  • If you have a dry scalp, then avoid shampoos that strengthen and volumize

Conditioning is as essential as cleansing hair. After washing your hair with shampoo, dry it with a towel, then conditioner, and apply it to the roots of your hair.

To ensure that it is getting to the roots, use a broad-toothed comb and run it through your hair. Leave the conditioner for some time(mentioned on the sachet/bottle) and then rinse it well with water.

Protein is all you need

It becomes challenging to maintain strong and healthy hair as you get older. Hence, keeping a check on the diet is quite essential as hair is all about protein.

Make sure that you have at least 45grams of protein. Fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and edamame are excellent sources of protein.

If you do not intake an adequate amount of protein, then your body has to cut down the amount of protein that has to be distributed throughout the body. Cutting down on protein might also reduce the supply to the hair follicles.

In a recent survey by the Indian Market Research Bureau, 9 out of 10 people intaken inadequate protein and had a protein deficiency of 91%(vegetarian) and 85% (non-vegetarian). Try having high protein vegetarian food.

Protein is required for increasing the length, repairing, and constructing new tissues.

Iron is important

Among women, this is one of the most common reasons for hair fall. Women who usually have heavy bleeding during menstrual periods have higher chances of iron deficiency.

In such scenarios, a lack of iron in the blood affects hair growth.

Common symptoms of iron deficiency:

  • Extreme fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Soreness of your tongue
  • Headache and dizziness
  • Pale skin and more

Red meat, pork, seafood, beans, spinach, dry fruits like raisins, and apricots are excellent sources of iron.

As per The National Family Health Survey-3, 2005-06 (NFHS-3), 55.3% of Indian women are anemic. Iron should be between 9-11mg for women and 11-13mg for men.

omega 3

Omega3: way to improve scalp health

Omega 3 is known to improve scalp health by stimulating follicles and sebaceous glands. It also prevents hair follicles inflammation which may lead to hair loss.

Omega 3 lubricates hair follicles, elasticity, brightness, and shine to your hair. And deficiency of it may lead to opaque, dandruff, and itchy scalp.

It was observed in a study done in 2015 that people consuming Omega-3 and Omega-6 had thicker hair and less hair fall compared to those who did not.

Wash and rub

Washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner is essential, but excess might harm it because, ultimately, it is composed of chemicals. Here are few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid using extremely cold/hot water.
  • Avoid washing your hair daily, as the more you wash, the more it will produce oil.
  • Gently pressure on the scalp and roots of your hair.
  • To evenly spread shampoo on your head, fix it with some water.
  • Focus on applying shampoo on the roots rather than the ends of hair as they are already dry, and applying shampoo there might make them even more.

Avoid conditioning scalp

The scalp has its natural oil. Hence, applying conditioner to the scalp makes the scalp even more oily. Our hair needs the moisture which it loses due to pollution and dirt.

You may apply the conditioner from the mid to the last. Conditioner is least needed at the scalp and most needed at last. Hence, apply it accordingly and leave it for some time.

It may also lead to dandruff or Seborrheic dermatitis.

If the scalp will be abnormally oily, then it may make your hair greasy or may keep it dirty all the time.

Food can save your hair

Many factors contribute to hair growth, like genetics, age, gender, and diet. Out of these, diet is something which is in our hands. We can manage and change it according to the needs and requirements.

Few foods that might add value to your hair health are:

  • Eggs- High in protein and biotin
  • Berries- High in antioxidants and Vitamin C
  • Spinach- Loaded with folate, iron, Vitamin A and C
  • Fatty fish- High in Omega 3
  • Sweet potatoes- Good source of beta-carotene and Vitamin A
  • Avocados- Great source of Vitamin E
  • Nuts- Rich in Vitamin E, Vitamin B, zinc

There are many more foods that might help in maintaining hair health.
